Hello, my name is Jenee Petri-Swanson. I have been interpreting since 2003. My philosophy for my interpreting practice is striving to meet the Deaf person’s needs and preferences. This means my behavior and services will look differently depending upon the Deaf person’s preferences.
For example, if a Deaf consumer does not like my sign choice, they can let me know and I will gladly incorporate their feedback and proposed sign into my work. If I am informed that my fingerspelling was not clear, I will repeat myself more clearly until understanding has been reached. If the presenter is walking around the room while they speak, I will ask the Deaf person if they’d like me to shadow them, or if they’d like me to remain stationary while interpreting. And if the Deaf person’s preference is to NOT engage with the interpreter and NOT provide guidance and feedback along the way, I will honor that choice as well.
